Starting With NaNoWriMo

Rather than clutter my book/gaming blogs with writing stuff, I thought I’d move it all to a separate entity, and what better way to start than with NaNoWriMo. I presume you all know what this barrel of madness is by now but just in case here’s the gist: write a 50,000 word novel within the month of November and join in with a great community.

My history with NaNoWriMo isn’t too bad. I heard about it in 2009 where I thought starting a couple of days into November meant that it was an entirely pointless endeavour and I had a stupid story and I’d never be a writer. Boohoo, etc. By 2010 I had kind of wished I’d sucked it up and written what I could. I gave it a jolly good bash but by 30k words I’d grown entirely bored of my story, threw my characters through a portal, made it to 40k and henceforth “couldn’t take it anymore”. Well, I tried. Roll on 2011 when I went in with a little more of a story. Okay.. not really. This time I tried “pantsing” it. (Going in with no idea of plot or characters and just rolling with the madness) Sometimes I grew bored, but this is where I started a second story to keep me writing. This time I was determined to hit 50k words, why? I wanted the 50% Scrivener discount. And I damn well got it.

So, here we are. NaNoWriMo 2012. This time I have a completely different story. The past few years I’ve had tentative urban fantasies and fairy tales. This year, I’m starting my baby. The high fantasy (or epic fantasy) I have wanted to write for years. I now have two solid characters, enough of a world and a plot to ride in on my white horse and save the day… or alternatively to pants my way through this nameless world and see where Eshne and Kato end up. I don’t need to hit 50k words by the end of November which takes away a lot of the stress and I have something I love to bring to life. It’ll be a shit life, I won’t lie. I like to call anything of mine that comes out of NaNo “draft 0.5”. Not quite a first draft, but not something to be disregarded either. NaNo gets me writing and reminds me what I love to do. No pressure to complete the 50k goal, just a bit of fun and a great community.

Who else is joining in this year? My profile is over here if you’re looking for buddies – just let me know who you are! 🙂
